Why Aleppo Soap Is a Great Choice for Sensitive Skin

Why Aleppo Soap Is a Great Choice for Sensitive Skin

Ask people with sensitive skin what they wash with, and Aleppo soap comes up again and again. There’s a good reason for that — and it isn’t marketing. It comes down to what’s in the bar, and just as importantly, what isn’t. Here’s why this centuries-old soap tends to suit reactive, easily-irritated skin.

It’s what’s not in it

Genuine Aleppo soap contains just olive oil and laurel oil, turned into soap. That’s the whole recipe. It has none of the usual suspects that tend to upset sensitive skin:

  • No synthetic fragrance — one of the most common irritants in conventional soap.
  • No SLS or harsh sulphate detergents.
  • No artificial colours or preservatives.

For a lot of people, simply removing those ingredients is what makes the difference.

The olive oil base

Olive oil makes up the bulk of an Aleppo bar, and it’s naturally mild. Rather than stripping the skin with an aggressive foam, it produces a soft, creamy lather and leaves skin feeling clean but not tight. That gentle character is the foundation of why Aleppo soap feels so different from a standard bar.

Choose a lower laurel percentage

Laurel oil is what gives Aleppo soap its scent and its deeper-cleansing edge — but for sensitive skin, more isn’t better. A lower-laurel bar (around 5–15%) is milder, more moisturising and far more subtly scented, which makes it the friendliest choice if your skin reacts easily. Our guide to laurel percentages walks through how to pick.

How to use it on sensitive skin

  • Patch test first. Try it on a small area for a couple of days before using it all over.
  • Start low-laurel. You can always move up later if your skin is happy.
  • Use lukewarm water. Very hot water is drying in its own right.
  • Moisturise while damp to seal in moisture after washing.

An honest note

Aleppo soap is gentle and free from common irritants, which is why so many people with sensitive skin get on well with it — but it isn’t a treatment, and no soap works for everyone. If you have a diagnosed skin condition or persistent irritation, it’s always best to check with a doctor or dermatologist.
