Every year it’s the same: the first warm week arrives, the sleeves come up, the sandals come out — and we suddenly remember that our skin has spent six months hidden under jumpers. If your arms and legs are feeling rough, dull or flaky after winter, you’re in good company. And the fix is simpler than a shelf full of products: proper exfoliation, done the traditional way.
Why winter skin feels rough
Skin naturally sheds dead cells all the time, but central heating, hot showers and months under layers leave a build-up on the surface. That build-up is what makes skin look dull and feel uneven — and it’s also why moisturiser sometimes seems to “stop working” in spring: it’s sitting on top of dead skin rather than reaching the fresh skin underneath.
Exfoliation simply lifts that layer away. Done well, skin immediately feels smoother and looks brighter — ready for sun cream, summer dresses and everything else the season brings.
The traditional two-step method
There are countless scrubs and gadgets out there, but the method we’d put against any of them is centuries old: the hammam combination of Moroccan black soap (beldi) and a kessa exfoliating mitt. It works because it splits the job in two:
- Soften first. Warm your skin in a hot shower or steamy bathroom for 5–10 minutes, then massage a thin layer of black soap over damp skin and leave it for 3–5 minutes. The olive-based paste softens the surface so dead skin is ready to let go.
- Then scrub. Rinse off most of the soap and work over your skin with the kessa mitt in firm, circular motions. You’ll actually see the dead skin roll away — oddly satisfying, and proof it’s working.
Most scrubs disappoint because they skip step one. Scrubbing cold, unprepped skin is hard work for mediocre results; softening first is the whole secret. (Full walkthrough in our home hammam guide.)
Timing it right for summer
- Start now, not the night before. One session makes a noticeable difference, but a weekly ritual for 3–4 weeks is what gets skin consistently smooth for the season.
- Once a week is plenty. Thorough exfoliation needs recovery time. More isn’t better — gentle and regular beats aggressive and occasional.
- Exfoliate before, never after, sun. Freshly exfoliated skin is best kept out of strong sun for a day, and never scrub sunburnt skin. Evening sessions work well.
- Before fake tan: exfoliate a day or two ahead for a more even application — it’s the step tanning guides always insist on, and the kessa does it properly.
The aftercare that makes it last
Exfoliated skin drinks up moisture, so the final step is non-negotiable: moisturise (or apply a light oil) while your skin is still damp from the shower. Daily washing with a gentle, olive-oil based soap between sessions keeps skin comfortable rather than stripped — harsh detergent gels undo your good work.
Everything you need for the season
Two items cover the whole routine: black soap and a kessa. You’ll find both in our hammam & exfoliation collection — including our 750ml lavender beldi that comes with the kessa glove included. One set, smoother skin, all summer.
