Moroccan Black Soap: Benefits and How to Use It at Home

Moroccan black soap has quietly become a bathroom favourite far beyond the traditional hammam — and once you’ve tried it, it’s easy to see why. Used the right way, this soft olive paste leaves skin feeling smoother and cleaner than almost any ordinary soap. Here’s what it does and exactly how to use it at home.

What Moroccan black soap does for your skin

  • Preps skin for deep exfoliation. Its real job is to soften the skin’s surface so that dead, dull cells lift away easily when you scrub. This is what gives that famous post-hammam smoothness.
  • Cleanses gently. Built on an olive-oil base, it cleans without the tight, stripped feeling of harsh detergent soaps.
  • Leaves skin feeling soft. The olive oil conditions as it cleans, so skin feels comfortable rather than dried out.
  • A natural, simple formula. Ours is olive-based with laurel and pine — no synthetic detergents or unnecessary additives.

How to use it at home, step by step

  1. Warm up. Spend a few minutes in a hot, steamy shower or bath first. Warm, damp skin is the secret to making the whole thing work.
  2. Apply a thin layer. Scoop out a small amount of the paste and massage it over damp skin. It won’t foam much — that’s normal.
  3. Wait 3–5 minutes. Let it sit and soften the skin. Don’t rush this part.
  4. Scrub with a kessa mitt. Rinse off most of the soap, then exfoliate in circular motions with a coarse mitt. You’ll feel the difference straight away.
  5. Rinse and moisturise. Rinse with warm water and smooth on a light oil or moisturiser while skin is still damp.

How often, and a few tips

  • Once a week is ideal for most skin — the exfoliation is thorough, so there’s no need to overdo it.
  • Go gently over delicate areas, and ease off if skin feels sore.
  • Always moisturise afterwards — freshly exfoliated skin loves it.
  • A little goes a long way, so one tub lasts a surprisingly long time.
